St. Joseph Ellinwood

SJCS Welcomes New Music Teacher, JoAnn Gaunt

10 August 2023

Saint Joseph Catholic School is pleased to welcome our new music teacher, JoAnn Gaunt.  Our Spirit Newsletter submitted a number of questions to her.

1. Can you tell us about yourself?  Where did you grow up?  Where did you go to school?

I grew up in Great Bend, and graduated from High School there.  I attended Grace Academy (now CKCA) in elementary and middle school. I attended college at FHSU and graduated with a BA in music, and later returned to get a MS in education.

2. Can you tell us about your family?

My husband, Kobus, is a farmer and he is an immigrant from South Africa.  I have two daughters, Hannah & Lydia, who are 7 & 5 respectively.  I also have a son named Jacob and he is 6 months old.

3. Why did you decide to become a teacher?

I didn't really want to become a teacher, which is why I initially didn't get an education degree.  When I was between jobs, I agreed to teach band at Holy Family School in Great Bend.  I loved it, and eventually returned to school to earn an education degree and teach music full time there.

4. How long have you been in education?  Where have you worked?

This will be my 12th year of teaching.  I taught for 8 years at Holy Family School in Great Bend, followed by teaching Vocal Music at Great Bend Middle School for three years.

5. What do you enjoy most about your career?

Music is just fun.  I enjoy sharing the fun with students.

6. Why have you chosen to teach at Saint Joseph’s Catholic School?

I loved teaching elementary music.  I have missed it so much over the last three years.  I also wanted to be able to spend more time with my family, and working here will allow me to do that.

7. Any hopes or plans as you begin this new stage of your career with us?

I hope to get lots of students to love music for a lifetime.
