Seed Wheat Blessing

Seed Wheat Blessing

Every year in the parishes of the cluster, seed wheat is blessed, on the first Sunday in September.  Farmers bring a small portion of their wheat to be blessed during the Mass.  This corresponds roughly with the old "rogation days" when procession went through the fields to bless them.

Invitation to Pray

Today we seek God's blessing on these seeds and the crops they will produce.  Christ reminds us that, unless the seed is planted in the earth and dies, it will not yield fruit.  As these seeds grow and are called for, may they be signs of the new life that comes from God.

Prayer of Blessing

Lord of the Harvest

You placed the gifts of creation in our hands

and called us to till the earth and make it fruitful.

We ask your blessing

as we prepare to place these seeds in the earth.

May the care we show them remind us of your tender love for your people.

We ask this through Christ our Lord.
